Out-of-round IX (1999)
This drawing is Out-of-round IX by Richard Serra created in 1999. This is oil paint stick on paper, and the way Serra created this was by thick applications of oil stick. One interesting things about this piece is that it is 79 1/2 in x 79 1/2 in. The placement of the circle is important because it is not centered. It is slightly pushes the right edge of the square. The area around the circle is 'blasted' so it seems like rays of sun around the circle. There is no concern for chiaroscuro or light. Because of the thickness of the application of the oil stick, it raises off the paper slightly which is interesting. I like this picture because it reminds of the movie "The Ring" which is one of my favorite horror movies.
